Italy: Unionized railway workers to stage 24-hour strike in Milan Oct. 8

Unionized railway workers to stage 24-hour strike in Milan, Italy, Oct. 8; delays likely.

Warning

Event

Unionized railway workers employed by Trenord and Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) in Milan will go on a 24-hour strike beginning 21:00 Oct. 8. Regional, suburban, and airport rail services will likely experience cancellations and significant delays. Despite Italian law typically guaranteeing a minimum level of service during transportation strikes, this will not be the case Oct. 8 as it is a non-work day. In the event the industrial action impacts the Malpensa Express airport connections, replacement buses will be provided between Cadorna Railway Station and Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP), as well as between MXP and Stabio. Additionally, trains scheduled to depart before 21:00 Oct. 8 and arrive at their destinations by 22:00 will operate as scheduled.

Services which do operate are likely to be more congested than usual. Increased demand for alternative forms of transport could lead to increased road traffic congestion and reduced taxi availability during the strike. Residual rail disruptions are possible even after the strike ends as the train operator repositions rolling stock.

Advice

Reconfirm the status of rail transport in Milan during the scheduled strike time frame and into at least the early hours of Oct. 10. Consider using alternative transport for time-sensitive travel. Allow extra time to reach destinations due to increased traffic congestion and demand for alternative transport.
