A magnitude-5.3 earthquake occurred in the East China Sea off Okinawa, Japan, at around 00:36 JST Oct. 7. The epicenter was about 154 km (96 miles) northwest of Nago. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 177 km (110 miles), and weak-to-light shaking was probably felt throughout northern Okinawa and southern Kagoshima prefectures. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake; however, significant damage is unlikely. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Weak aftershocks are likely over the coming days.
