Activists to stage series of protests in major cities in Malawi, Oct. 27-28. Likely increased security and traffic disruptions.

A group of civil society activists plans on staging protests against the current government on Oct. 27 and 28. The main march in Lilongwe will seek to deliver a petition to President Lazarus Chakwera. Demonstrations are scheduled in the following locations:
Blantyre and Zomba on Oct. 27
Lilongwe on Oct. 28
Additional demonstrations could occur in other cities. Timings and exact locations are still being discussed, but gathering points could likely include the District Commissioner's offices in Blantyre and Zomba, and the Kamuzu Presidential Palace in Lilongwe. The opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and the United Democratic Front (UDF) have issued statements in support of the action. Hundreds to a few thousand people could participate.
Security will likely be increased to monitor the protests, especially near government buildings. Clashes between police forces and protesters are possible if participants ignore orders to disperse. The protest action and security personnel response, which could include road closures, will likely result in ground travel and business operation disruptions. Affected areas could extend beyond the protest route should protestors be dispersed.
