Mexico: Activists to stage anti-abortion protests nationwide Oct. 8-9

Anti-abortion activists plan to demonstrate in numerous cities throughout Mexico Oct. 8-9. At least one million people are likely to participate nationwide, and around 200,000 participants are expected in Mexico City alone.

Marches slated to take place at the following locations and start times will likely be among the larger gatherings:

  • Guadalajara: Glorieta Minerva at 16:00 Oct. 8 before marching at 17:00 to the Glorieta de los Ninos Heroes.

  • Mexico City: Auditorio Nacional at 11:00 Oct. 9 before marching to the Angel de la Independencia.

  • Morelia: Plaza Del Caballito at 09:30 Oct. 9 before marching to the Catedral de Morelia.

  • Tepic: Parque Juan Escutia at 0900 Oct. 9 before marching to La plaza Vicentenario.

  • Tijuana: Plaza Toreo City Complex at 09:20 Oct. 8 before marching to the Ayuntamiento de Tijuana.

  • Veracruz: The Iglesia del Cristo del Buen Viaje at 17:00 Oct. 8 before marching to the Macroplaza.

Authorities will almost certainly deploy increased security near protest areas. Clashes between activists and security forces cannot be ruled out, especially if officers attempt to disperse crowds forcibly. Disruptions to transport and business are likely in affected areas.

Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. Allow extra time to reach destinations near potential protest sites in all major cities Oct. 8-9. Heed the instructions of local authorities.
