Moldova: Anti-government protests likely to continue in Chisinau through November /update 2

Anti-government activists, led by the opposition SOR party, continue to stage regular protests in central Chisinau; these will likely continue through November. The purpose of the demonstrations is to demand the resignation of President Maia Sandu and the government and call for early elections amid inflation and perceived missteps in gas negotiations with Russia. SOR is calling for continued large-scale protests outside the Presidential Palace each Sunday at around 15:00; attendance is typically in the thousands. Further protests on other days and locations in central Chisinau are also likely through November; possible gathering points include outside the parliament and government administration buildings, in addition to central squares and boulevards.

Additional police will deploy to monitor any demonstrations that occur. Protests and related security measures, including possible road closures and movement restrictions, will likely prompt localized transport disruptions in the area. Demonstrations are likely to proceed peacefully, though isolated clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out, particularly if activists attempt to breach any security cordons. Moldovan security services arrested several non-compliant protesters at demonstrations in Chisinau Oct. 30.
