Moldova: Tight security and demonstrations likely ahead of second round of presidential election Nov. 3
Second round of presidential election scheduled in Moldova on Nov. 3; increased security, localized disruptions, and protests likely.
Authorities will likely increase security ahead of Moldova's second and final round of the presidential election on Nov. 3; election rallies and opposing demonstrations are likely in the days leading up to the polls and in the hours immediately following the publication of the results. The most disruptive demonstrations are likely to take place in the country's capital city, Chisinau; members of the Party of Communists of Moldova will stage a protest at Strada Alexandru Lapusneanu, Chjisinau, from 09:30 Oct. 31.
Further minor demonstrations might occur across Moldova through Oct. 30-Nov. 3, without prior warning. Early on Oct. 30, activists reportedly started a minor protest in central Chisinau to denounce the current president, Maia Sandu. The demonstration was peacefully stopped by law enforcement officers.
Law enforcement will likely monitor potential gatherings and impose traffic restrictions near voting centers in populous and contested areas. Violence is unlikely, though large gatherings may cause localized transport disruptions; law enforcement will likely deploy to disperse large protests.
Exercise caution around polling stations, election-related gatherings, government and court buildings, political party offices, and likely protest sites. Monitor local media or check with trusted local sources for updates on possible post-election demonstrations and associated disruptions, as events could take place with no or little warning. Avoid any protests that may materialize following the vote due to the potential for clashes.
