Nepal, China: Magnitude-4.9 earthquake occurs in near the Nepal-China border Oct. 19
Magnitude-4.9 earthquake occurs near the Nepal-China border at around 15:22 Oct. 19. No immediate reports of damage or injuries.
Event
A magnitude-4.9 earthquake occurred near the Nepal-China border between Bagmati Province in Nepal and Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) in China at around 15:22 Oct. 19. The epicenter was about 12 km (7 miles) east-southeast of Kodari, Nepal. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 30 km (19 miles), and light shaking was probably felt throughout parts of central and eastern Nepal, southern TAR in China, and northern Bihar State in India. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake, and significant damage is unlikely. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Light aftershocks are likely over the coming days.
Officials may temporarily shut down transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to check for damage. Minor disruptions could occur during shutdowns, but service will likely resume quickly if no damage is found. Utility outages are possible, particularly near the earthquake's epicenter.
Advice
Out of an abundance of caution, consider vacating multistory buildings where shaking occurred until authorities confirm their structural integrity. Monitor and plan for aftershocks.
