Pakistan: Further protests likely in Swat District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, into at least mid-October

Protests denouncing the recent killing of a local school bus driver and demanding greater government involvement to provide security will likely continue in Swat District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, into at least early October. On Oct. 11, thousands of demonstrators congregated in Mingora city’s Nishat Chowk area, reportedly causing localized transport disruptions. Protest leaders have threatened to march to Islamabad if the district administration fails to meet their demands within 24 hours.

Additional gatherings are possible throughout Swat District, especially near prominent government buildings, public squares, and roadways. Authorities will likely monitor any such demonstrations and may attempt to disperse especially disruptive gatherings. Clashes between activists and police are possible. Localized transport disruptions are likely near sites where protests materialize.

Swat District is approximately 73 mi (117 km) northeast of Peshwar.
