Power outages occurring in various areas of Pakistan as of Oct. 13. Commercial, transport disruptions possible.

Warning

Event

Power outages are occurring in several areas across Pakistan since around 09:30 Oct. 13 due to a national power transmission grid failure. Officials stated Sindh Province is the worst-affected, with widespread outages occurring in Karachi. Other significantly impacted areas include Multan and Bahawalnagar in Punjab Province. Authorities are working to restore power supply to affected areas, though it is not immediately clear when services will resume.

Temporary commercial and communications disruptions are possible during the outages; cellular and mobile services could be affected. Traffic disruptions and longer driving times are possible due to malfunctioning traffic signals. Power outages could also result in the temporary unavailability of essential services such as ATMs and filling stations. There is an increased security threat during power outages. Blackouts could adversely affect security protocols, including alarm systems and electronic fences; opportunistic criminal activity could increase during electricity outages.

Prolonged outages may prompt protests by opposition parties and civilians. Dozens of people could hold sit-ins or marches in urban centers, especially near government buildings, major intersections, and offices of electricity companies. Security deployment is possible at large rallies, and police may forcibly disperse unruly crowds.

Advice

Conserve batteries and restrict cellphone use to emergencies in case of an extended power outage. For safety reasons, monitor generators while they are operating due to potential fires. Unplug appliances and electronic equipment to protect against surge damage when power resumes. Monitor trusted local media for updates on service resumption schedules. Avoid all protests as a security precaution; do not navigate roadblocks as protesters may react violently. Heed all official advisories.
