Warning

Event

Pakistan Tahrik-e-Insaaf (PTI) supporters are protesting in several areas of Pakistan as of Oct. 21 following the Election Committee of Pakistan’s (ECP) verdict announcement. The ECP found PTI chairman and former prime minister Imran Khan guilty of not revealing details of his acquisition of gifts he received during his term as prime minister; such gifts are typically considered state possessions. The ECP also disqualified Khan from being a member of the National Assembly. Protests have broken out near the ECP Secretariat in Islamabad and on several roadways in Lahore, including Jail Block Road. Related protests have also been reported on roadways in Haripur, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Rawat, Islamabad Capital Territory.

Additional PTI protests are likely in the coming hours and days. The largest gatherings are likely in major cities and towns, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab provinces. Likely protest locations include government buildings, public squares, and major roadways. Hundreds to thousands of people may attend bigger gatherings.

Authorities will likely monitor protests and may try to disperse gatherings if they are especially disruptive. Clashes between protesters and police are possible; security personnel may use force, including firing tear gas and water cannons, to disperse violent crowds. Protesters may march along or block roadways, causing localized transport disruptions. Business disruptions are possible, especially if violence breaks out.

Advice

Avoid protests due to possible clashes. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time near gatherings. Do not attempt to cross roadblocks, as protesters may react violently. Confirm business appointments in advance.
