South Korea: Women’s rights activists plan to rally nationwide Oct. 15

Women’s rights activists to demonstrate across South Korea Oct. 15. Increased security, localized disruptions likely.

Informational

Event

Women’s rights activists affiliated with 115 civil society organizations will demonstrate nationwide Oct. 15 to oppose the government’s proposed plan to abolish the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family. As a part of the rallies, organizers will gather at Jonggak Station in Seoul beginning at 14:00.

Although demonstrators have not yet revealed further details, additional gatherings will likely occur near prominent government buildings, subway stations, public squares, and roadways. The largest turnouts are likely in major cities, such as Seoul.

Authorities will likely monitor any demonstrations and may attempt to disperse especially disruptive gatherings. While the rallies will probably pass peacefully, isolated skirmishes between activists and security personnel remain possible. Localized transport disruptions are likely, especially near Jonggak Station, and if activists block and/or march along roadways. Localized business disruptions are possible.

Advice

Avoid any gatherings as a precaution. Plan for localized transport and possible business disruptions near sites where demonstrations materialize. If violence erupts nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter at a safe nongovernment building. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
