Informational

Event

Cameroonian authorities are likely to deploy heightened security to the Southwest Region's Bakassi Peninsula over the coming days after suspected Biafra Nations League (BnL) gunmen kidnapped three oil workers in the area Nov. 5. The kidnapping, during which the gunmen also stole the victims' boat and other equipment, took place as the employees were traveling to their place of work; the oil company in question reportedly operates in the Atabong area of the Bakassi Peninsula. No casualties were immediately reported in connection with the incident. The whereabouts of the abducted oil workers were unknown as of Nov. 5.

Context

The BnL is a separatist group that is operationally headquartered in Cameroon's Bakassi Peninsula and seeks the independence of Biafra, a former secessionist state composed of parts of southeastern Nigeria that declared independence from Lagos in 1967. The Biafran secession triggered the Nigerian Civil War, and the breakaway state collapsed after its officers surrendered to advancing Nigerian forces in 1970.

Advice

Exercise increased vigilance if operating in the Bakassi Peninsula. Consider maintaining regular contact with your diplomatic mission, traveling only in convoys, and avoiding all travel after dark. Confirm that a thorough communication plan exists to ensure rapid accountability for all personnel operating in Cameroon's Southwest Region.
