Chile: Government extends state of emergency in La Araucania and Bio-Bio regions through Nov. 27. /update 6

Event

Authorities have extended a state of emergency in southern Chile through Nov. 27 in response to local violence. The state of emergency applies to the Arauco and Bio-Bio provinces of Bio-Bio Region as well as the entirety of the La Araucania Region. Under the state of emergency, armed forces are authorized to conduct patrols, prevent violence or blockades on highways, and limit entry to and exit from certain areas.

Heightened security measures and transport disruptions are likely in areas subject to the state of emergency; security forces may conduct traffic checks and Mapuche activists may attempt to blockade roads, particularly smaller roads off of major highways. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces or work crews are possible.

Context

Recent weeks have seen several acts of arson, shooting, and robbery, particularly against logging and mining crews, carried out by groups claiming to represent the interests of the indigenous Mapuche people.
