DRC: Activists to stage a series of protests in Kinshasa Nov. 8, 9, and 12

The US Embassy issues demonstration alert for series of protests in Kinshasa, DRC, Nov. 8, 9, and 12. Avoid all protests.

Warning

Event

The US Embassy in Kinshasa issued a security alert Nov. 7, warning that civil society activists plan to stage a series of demonstrations in the city on Nov. 8, 9, and 12. The purpose of the protests remain unclear. However, the demonstrations may be to denounce the alleged Rwandan backing of the M23 rebels. Specific events include:

  • Nov. 8: Organizers plan to gather at the Gare Centrale and march along the Avenue des Aviateurs, passing the US Embassy and the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) headquarters. Demonstrations are likely to continue along the Avenue of Lt. Colonel Lukusa and pass the Rwandan Embassy via the Rond-Point Forescom.

  • Nov. 9: Possible planned demonstrations in front of the US Embassy and MONUSCO headquarters.

  • Nov. 12: Organizers plan to gather at the Palais du Peuple and march along the Boulevard Triomphal. Alternative routes traveling to N'djili Airport (FIH) are advisable according to the US Embassy alert.

A heightened security presence is likely near the protest sites. Protestors may congregate in front of these locations for an unknown duration. Clashes are possible if protesters ignore police orders to disperse. Localized ground travel disruptions are possible near all protest locations.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a precaution. Plan for disruptions in the affected areas due to possible heightened security measures including roadblocks and other movement restrictions, increased security personnel, and heavy traffic. Allow additional time to reach nearby destinations. Maintain contact with diplomatic missions. Monitor local media for updated information. Adhere to directives issued by local authorities. If clashes occur, depart the area immediately and seek shelter in a secure nongovernmental building.
