Unionized workers plan multi-sector strikes and marches across France, Nov. 10. Travel disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Unionized workers represented by CGT, Force Ouvriere, Solidaires, UNSA, and other unions will continue multi-sector strike activity nationwide, on Nov. 10. This continues a campaign of nationwide industrial action to demand improved pay and working conditions, and denounce the increased cost of living. The key sectors likely to be disrupted are local public transport, the national rail network, and public services.

Unless averted, these strikes could cause significant nationwide disruptions to transport and other services. In Paris, unions have filed a strike notice from 22:00 Nov. 9-07:00 Nov. 11; Metro and RER services will likely be heavily impacted. SNCF rail services will also likely experience significant disruptions nationwide. Public sector workers affiliated with CGT will also observe strike action Nov. 10; however, it is unclear how well observed the strike will be in this sector.

Workers' demonstrations are possible at transport hubs and in proximity to public buildings. The following street demonstrations have been confirmed for Nov. 10:

  • Lille: Rally at the Porte de Paris from 14:30.

  • Montpellier: Rally at Montpellier-Saint-Roch train station from 12:00.

  • Toulouse: Protest march from Metro Francois Verdier at 14:00; the exact march route is unclear.

It is unclear how well observed the strikes and protests will be; however, previous related actions on Oct. 18 prompted significant transport disruptions and featured tens of thousands of demonstrators nationwide. Increased security and localized disruptions are likely in the vicinity of any street gatherings. Widespread violence is not anticipated.

Advice

Check transport availability if traveling in France during the strike period, and plan for delays and cancellations. Confirm business meetings and appointments at government agencies. Follow local travel and security advice. Be prepared for localized business and travel disruption in the vicinity of protest sites. Avoid all protests as a standard precaution.
