Informational

Event

Activists plan to demonstrate outside Parliament in Rabat from 17:30 Nov. 29 to commemorate the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. Protesters are denouncing Morocco's normalization of relations with Israel. Hundreds of individuals could attend the event.

Increased security and localized transport disruptions are likely near Parliament the evening of Nov. 29. Clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out, particularly if demonstrators are overly disruptive or if they ignore police orders to disperse.

Context

Morocco resumed full diplomatic relations with Israel in December 2020. As part of the agreement, Morocco granted overflights of its airspace and direct commercial flights to and from Israel for all Israeli citizens. While Morocco and Israel have historically maintained unofficial diplomatic ties, Rabat's recognition of the state of Israel transpired after former US President Donald J. Trump's recognition of Morocco's claim of sovereignty over Western Sahara. Israel and Morocco reopened diplomatic missions in each other's capitals in January 2021 and have continued to deepen their economic and trade ties.

Advice

Avoid the protest due to the potential for clashes. Heed the advice of security personnel. Allow additional time if traveling through the affected area Nov. 29.
