Nigeria: Protests, counterprotests by academic staff and students possible at universities nationwide through at least end of November

Protests, counterprotests by academic staff and students possible at universities nationwide in Nigeria through at least end of November.

Informational

Event

Protests by academic staff are possible at universities nationwide through at least the end of November amid a salary dispute etweeny members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the government. ASUU representatives have instructed all branches to pick their own dates to protest; actions usually conclude without major incident.

In response to the actions of the ASUU, counterprotests by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) are possible. The NANS has repeatedly called for protests to either denounce the ASUU strike and/or the government's alleged inaction in solving the issue. NANS actions have been particularly disruptive occurring in main urban centers, major highways, and around transport hubs, including airports, among other affected locations

Other gathering locations may include ASUU secretariats and government buildings. Heightened security and localized traffic disruptions are likely in the vicinity of any gathering. While related recent protests passed peacefully, clashes with security forces remain possible, notably if the protests become overly disruptive.

Context

The ASUU went on strike Feb. 14 after the government failed to implement several of the organization's demands. While union representatives announced an end to the work stoppage on Oct. 14, tensions with the government remain over several grievances, including salary payments.

Advice

Avoid all gatherings. Plan for travel delays near protest sites. Heed the instructions of local authorities. If violence erupts, leave the area immediately.
