Nigeria: Unionized university teachers to gather in Lagos Nov. 15

ASUU union calls for rally at Julius Berger Auditorium in Lagos, Nigeria, from 10:00 Nov. 15.

Informational

Event

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called for a combined protest and special congress at the Julius Berger Auditorium in Lagos from 10:00 Nov. 15. It is unclear how many people will participate.

Heightened security and traffic disruptions are likely around the Julius Berger Auditorium located nearby the University of Lagos. Clashes between protesters and police are unlikely but isolated skirmishes cannot be ruled out. Protesters affiliated with student unions may also assemble and clash with security forces.

Context

The ASUU went on strike Feb. 14 after the government failed to implement several of the organization's demands. While union representatives announced an end to the work stoppage on Oct. 14, tensions with the government remain over several grievances, including salary payments.

Advice

Avoid all protests and roadblocks. Allow extra time to reach destinations near rally sites. If violence erupts, leave the area immediately. Heed the instructions of local authorities.
