Pakistan: Authorities to impose increased security for international cricket matches in Islamabad and Rawalpindi Dec. 1-5

Pakistani authorities to tighten security in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, Dec. 1-5 to facilitate international cricket matches with England.

Warning

Event

Authorities will implement heightened security measures in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, Punjab Province, Dec. 1-5 to facilitate the international cricket matches between Pakistan's and England's national teams. Around 1,200 security personnel will be deployed as a precaution.

Officials will likely impose strict traffic restrictions, including detours and road closures, especially around the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium and to facilitate local travel by England's team. Authorities may also intensify pedestrian and vehicle checks near the impacted areas. Security measures may prompt associated transport disruptions. Isolated security incidents cannot be ruled out.

Context

International cricket teams have rarely visited Pakistan since Islamist militants opened fire on the Sri Lankan team bus in Lahore in March 2009. In September 2019, over ten top Sri Lankan national players withdrew from a scheduled tournament citing security concerns, almost prompting the event's cancellation. Pakistani authorities have since assured the international community that extensive security is in place for visiting teams.

Advice

Exercise caution if operating in Rawalpindi and Islamabad Dec. 1-5. Carry proper identification documents in the impacted areas; heed all official transport and security advisories.
