Pakistan: Former prime minister wounded in assassination attempt in Gujranwala Nov. 3

Former prime minister wounded in assassination attempt in Gujranwala, Pakistan, Nov. 3.

Critical

Event

An armed assailant carried out an assassination attempt against former prime minister and leader of the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) party, Imran Kahn, in Gujranwala, Punjab Province, Nov. 3. The incident occurred in the Allahwala Chowk area of the city while Khan was attending a rally; his injuries are not life-threatening, and authorities have transported him to a hospital in Lahore. Police have detained the shooter.

Police will almost certainly maintain a heightened security presence in the area in the coming hours; localized disruptions are likely.

Spontaneous protests in response to the shooting by PTI supporters are likely. PTI supporters were already engaging in an anti-government march towards Islamabad, and the shooting is likely to escalate political tensions in the country, possibly swelling attendance at any upcoming planned events. In light of the increased tensions, the threat of violence at any PTI-led demonstrations or rallies is elevated.

Advice

If in Gujranwala, avoid the impact area. Elsewhere in Pakistan, monitor developments closely, avoid all protests or areas where large crowds are gathering. If violence erupts, depart the area immediately and seek shelter in a secure nongovernmental building.
