Indigenous community members in Loreto Province freed more than 240 tourists Nov. 4 after having detained them for 28 hours in protest over oil spills in the region. The tourists had been aboard a ferry traveling down the Cuninico River when they were taken hostage Nov. 3. The incident took place in the Cuninico municipality, located in the Urarinas District. US, UK, French, Swiss, and Spanish nationals were among the detained group.
