Peru: Jorge Chavez International Airport (LIM) extends closure until 00:01 Nov. 20 following aircraft collision with vehicle on runway Nov. 18 /update 2

Peru's Jorge Chavez International Airport (LIM) extends closure until 00:01 Nov. 20 after aircraft collides with vehicle on runway Nov. 18.

Critical

Event

Authorities at Jorge Chavez International Airport (LIM) in Callao announced that the airport will remain closed until 00:01 Nov. 20, with all flights suspended until that time. The extended closure will allow authorities to investigate the Nov. 18 incident in which LATAM Airlines (LA) Flight 2213 collided with a firetruck on the runway and briefly caught fire. The accident killed at least two firefighters that were in the truck; no casualties were reported among the passengers or crew of the flight, which was destined for Juliaca's Inca Manco Capac International Airport (JUL).

Because LIM serves Lima, the capital, and is Peru's largest airport, flight disruptions are likely at the facility through at least Nov. 21 as authorities work to clear flight backlogs. Increased demand for flights to the airport is also likely after flight operations resume as travelers who were redirected or otherwise experienced disruptions to their itinerary as a result of the aircraft collision seek to reach their destinations.

Advice

Prepare for significant flight disruptions until at least Nov. 21. Reconfirm flights before departing for the airport; consider booking alternative travel arrangements if necessary. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
