Peru: Protesters to gather in multiple cities across country Nov. 5

Protesters to demonstrate in multiple cities across Peru Nov. 5; transport disruptions, heightened security likely. Avoid all protests.

Warning

Event

Protesters aligned with the political opposition will gather in multiple cities across Peru Nov. 5 to demand the resignation of President Pedro Castillo. The largest gathering will occur in Lima, where thousands of demonstrators are likely to gather at the Paseo de los Heroes Navales beginning at 14:00. Protest leaders say that demonstrations will also occur in main plazas in the cities of Arequipa, Chiclayo, Cusco, Huacho, Huancayo, Iquitos, Juliaca, Piura, Pucallpa, Sullana, and Trujillo. Additionally, related demonstrations are possible in other smaller cities and towns.

The protests are likely to cause transport disruptions in the city centers where they occur. Police are likely to deploy to monitor protest activity. While the demonstrations are likely to be peaceful, clashes cannot be ruled out, especially if police attempt to forcibly disperse demonstrators or if counterprotesters are allowed to come into close contact with rival activists.

Advice

Avoid the protests as a precaution. Allow for additional transport time near all demonstrations. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a nongovernmental building.
