Peru: Transport workers holding nationwide strikes, blockades as of Nov. 24 /update 1

Several labor unions representing workers in the heavy cargo and public transportation sectors, including the National Union of Cargo Transporters (Union Nacional de Transportistas de Carga, UNT), are continuing to hold indefinite strikes and blockades across Peru as of Nov. 24 to protest high fuel prices. Groups of farmers have also reportedly joined demonstrations to denounce high prices of fuel and fertilizer. Blockades have affected major roads nationwide, restricting transport of goods to cities; the capital area of Lima has been particularly affected. Clashes involving protesters have occurred. Nearly 400,000 vehicles are reportedly taking part in the protests.

Strike and blockades may last through at least late November. Heightened security is almost certain near major blockades. Transit and business disruptions are likely, particularly for businesses dependent on shipping goods by truck. Clashes are possible, particularly if police attempt to forcibly disperse demonstrators and reopen roads. Strikes affecting public transit in cities are possible.
