Qatar: Increased security likely in Doha as a precaution against potential clashes during Argentina v. Poland match on Nov. 30

Heightened security likely in Doha, Qatar, during Argentina v. Poland soccer match Nov. 30; localized clashes possible.

Warning

Event

Authorities in Doha will likely maintain very tight security around Stadium 974, Souq Waqif, and other popular gathering places in the Qatari capital ahead through the FIFA World Cup match between Argentina and Poland during the evening of Nov. 30. Preliminary reports indicate that more than 200 members of so-called "Barras Bravas" - Argentine soccer fan groups with a reputation for provoking violence with supporters of opposing teams or against police - are planning to attend the event. While similar numbers of Barras Bravas members attended Argentina's Nov. 26 match against Mexico without major incident, authorities will almost certainly take extra precautions given that the game against Poland will be Argentina's last chance to qualify for the next phase of the World Cup. The match will take place at Stadium 974 starting at 22:00.

Qatari authorities will likely be quick to respond to any confrontations or other security incidents that may occur surrounding the game.

Context

In June 2022, Argentine authorities signed a cooperation agreement with the Qatari embassy to prevent violent Argentine fans from attending the World Cup. More than 6,000 supporters were banned from entering stadiums, among which at least 3,000 were reportedly Barras Bravas.

Advice

Exercise increased situational awareness in Doha into at least the early morning hours of Dec. 1, particularly in the vicinity of Stadium 974 and other venues where fans may hold post-match gatherings. Strictly heed the instructions of security personnel; respect local customs and avoid sensitive topics of conversation.
