Protests denouncing Iranian government possible in Doha, Qatar, ahead of, during, and after US vs. Iran match in FIFA World Cup Nov. 29.

Informational

Event

Iranian soccer fans may stage protests in Doha denouncing the Iranian government ahead of, during, and/or immediately after the upcoming FIFA World Cup match between the US and Iran Nov. 29. The game is scheduled to begin at 22:00 at Al-Thumama Stadium in the capital. Iranian fans notably chanted anti-government slogans and demonstrated in solidarity with the ongoing protest movement in Iran outside the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha Nov. 21. Iranian government supporters also reportedly harassed anti-Iranian government protesters during the country's second game against Wales at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium Nov. 25; meanwhile, Qatari security forces confiscated pre-revolutionary flags, t-shirts, and other items from spectators who were displaying solidarity with the protesters in Iran at the stadium.

Any protest that materializes will almost certainly pass peacefully. However, Qatari authorities will likely be quick to disperse any protesters in an effort to prevent transport and business disruptions.

Context

The Iranian soccer team refused to sing the country's national anthem in the Iran vs. England match in solidarity with the protest movement in Iran, which erupted in mid-September following the death of a Kurdish-Iranian woman who died in custody for allegedly violating Iran's dress code.

Advice

Avoid any protests that materialize. Follow all official instructions. Adhere to local customs and avoid sensitive topics of discussion, including religious and political issues.
