Informational

Event

The South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU) is set to mark the Global Day for Climate Action on Nov. 12 with a protest in Tshwane. Participants will gather at Church Square and from 10:00 march to the Department of Public Works, the National Treasury, the Department of Public Enterprises, and end at the Union Buildings. The action will be part of a worldwide series of marches planned to coincide with the COP27 conference in Egypt. Participants aim at raising climate change awareness.

Other unplanned marches and demonstrations are possible and could result in minor disruptions. Marches are likely around government buildings and state-owned enterprises. Additionally, because of the ongoing energy crisis in South Africa, actions may also focus on the offices of the national energy provider, Eskom. Police will likely deploy to monitor the demonstrations; localized traffic disruptions are possible in the vicinity of rallies. Widespread violence is not likely.

Advice

Plan accordingly for minor transport disruptions. Heed the instructions of officials. Reconfirm the status of road routes before departure.
