South Africa: Pro-Palestinian activists plan to protest in Cape Town, Oct. 5

Pro-Palestinian activists protest in Cape Town, South Africa, Oct. 5; localized disruptions possible.

Informational

Pro-Palestinian activists plan to protest in Cape Town, Western Cape Province, Oct. 5. Protesters plan to gather at the corner of Hanover and Chapel streets before marching to the South African Parliament. The amount of participants the event may draw remains unclear.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are possible. Counter-protests, while unlikely, are also possible. Minor clashes between protesters and police, as well as counterprotesters, cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the protest area as a precaution. Refrain from discussing sensitive topics, including the situation in Israel and the Palestinian Territories, in public spaces, especially with unfamiliar persons. Prepare for localized transport disruptions. Reconfirm consulate appointments. Heed instructions from authorities.

Since the Israel-Hamas war broke out in October 2023, related demonstrations have regularly been held in South Africa. While violence has been reported at some rallies, most have remained peaceful. The most frequent gatherings have occurred in Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Pretoria; there remains an elevated risk of clashes between pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli activists, both notably engaged in clashes in Cape Town in November 2023.
