Turkey claims dozens of airstrikes targeting Kurd separatists in northern Iraq and Syria, Nov. 19-20. Further attacks are possible.

Informational

Event

Turkish military officials issued a statement Nov. 20 claiming 89 attacks against terrorist targets in northern Iraq and northern Syria Nov. 19 and early Nov. 20. The attacks were in retaliation for a Nov. 13 bombing in Istanbul, which Turkish authorities blame on Kurd militants. Officials noted that sites linked to Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and Syrian People's Protection Units (YPG) were targeted. Impacted locations in Iraq include the Qandil Mountains, Asos, and Hakurk. Impacted locations in Syria include Tall Rifat, Derik, and Kobani. Kurdish separatists and Syrian government sources have indicated that the attacks killed several civilians and Syrian soldiers.

The US Consulate General in Erbil issued a security alert Nov. 18, noting the potential of Turkish military action in northern Syria and northern Iraq, and reiterated its advice to US citizens to avoid these areas.

Military forces in southern and southeastern Turkey and Syria will almost certainly maintain a heightened security posture over the coming days. Further airstrikes are possible. Airstrikes will likely continue targeting mountainous border areas in Iraq, where PKK forces are largely based.

Advice

Exercise caution and avoid all military sites in Syria and Iraq. Heed the instructions of local security forces. If airstrikes, artillery fire, or warning sirens are reported in the general vicinity, take cover in the nearest bomb shelter and remain there until given further instructions by authorities.
