Timor-Leste: Activists plan to protest in Dili through Jan. 7

Activists plan to protest in Dili, Timor-Leste, through Jan. 7. Increased security likely; localized disruptions, clashes possible.

Informational

Event

Activists from the National Maubere Alliance group plan to demonstrate in Dili through Jan. 7 to oppose government policies that have allegedly caused economic inequality. Around 150 people participated in a related peaceful protest in front of the National Parliament in Dili Nov. 7. Organizers have called for gatherings every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday through Jan. 7, though additional demonstrations may occur in short notice. Potential protest sites include government buildings, such as the Presidential Palace.

Increased security is likely near any demonstration venues. Localized business and transport disruptions may occur. Clashes between protesters and security personnel are possible, particularly if activists are overly disruptive or if they ignore police orders to disperse. Mass arrests of demonstrators cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid all protests due to the potential for clashes. Plan for possible localized transport and business disruptions near demonstrations and seek alternative routes to circumvent affected areas. If any violence erupts, immediately leave the area and seek shelter at a nongovernment building. Heed the advice of security personnel.
