Large gatherings and heightened security are likely in Buenos Aires, Dec. 20, as Argentina celebrates its national team's 2022 FIFA World Cup victory. Members and coaches of the winning team will depart the Argentina Football Federation's (Asociacion del Futbol Argentino, AFA) main training field in the city of Ezeiza at around 12:00 Dec. 20 before traveling by bus to the Obelisco monument in the center of the nation's capital for the main celebration. The players will also likely meet with government representatives at the presidential office building, the Casa Rosada. The government has declared the date a national holiday.
Hundreds of thousands of people will likely attend the celebrations; crowds could occupy much of central Buenos Aires. Very large crowds will also probably gather along the General Ricchieri, Luis Dellepiane, and 25 May highways as the team travels into the capital from Ezeiza. Similar celebrations are likely in other major cities nationwide.
Authorities will almost certainly deploy very robust security for the duration of the events. Transport and business disruptions are highly likely throughout most of Dec. 20. Isolated clashes and other security incidents cannot be ruled out.
