Bangladesh: Various opposition parties to hold protest marches in parts of Dhaka Dec. 30
Various opposition parties to stage protest marches in Dhaka, Bangladesh, Dec. 30. Increased security likely; clashes possible.
Event
Various opposition parties and political alliances will stage protest marches across Dhaka Dec. 30 to demand several concessions, including the resignation of the current administration led by Awami League (AL). Most gatherings will commence after the Friday Islamic afternoon prayers. Organizers have revealed the following assembly points:
Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP): Activists to gather at BNP headquarters in Naya Paltan and march toward an undisclosed location in the Banglamotors neighborhood 14:00-17:00.
Jamaat-e-Islami: Participants are to convene at Baitul Mukkaram National Mosque beginning 15:30; the endpoint remains unclear.
Liberal Democratic Party (LDP): Organizers will assemble outside the LDP office in Tejgaon before leading a procession toward Malibagh Junction beginning 15:00.
12-Party Alliance: Demonstrators to gather at the National Press Club and march toward an undisclosed location in the Shantinagar neighborhood; the starting time remains unclear.
Additional gatherings are possible, especially near political party offices, government buildings, public squares or grounds, and along major thoroughfares. While gathering sizes will vary by location and number of supporters, the largest turnout is likely at BNP-related events with thousands of participants. Activists may change venue locations at short notice if police prevent them from assembling or due to organizational-related issues.
Authorities will almost certainly increase security near any rally sites and may attempt to disperse especially disruptive gatherings. Security personnel typically resort to using force, such as tear gas and rubber bullets, to quell civil unrest incidents. Officials may also conduct mass arrests if activists defy orders to disperse. Clashes between police and activists, as well as between various rival political groups, cannot be ruled out. Violence may occur at larger rallies. Localized transport disruptions are likely.
Advice
Avoid all demonstrations due to the increased risk of violence. If clashes break out, depart the area immediately and seek shelter at a secure, nongovernmental building. Allow additional time near sites where gatherings materialize. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
