Protesters blocking Dhaka-Tangail Highway in Gazipur, Bangladesh, Dec. 23. Increased security reported; violence possible.
Workers are blocking the National Highway 4 (N4) at Konabari, Gazipur, Dhaka Division, as of the afternoon of Dec. 23. The action is to demand the reopening of two recently closed garment factories. Several dozen people are participating in the protest, prompting security deployment and significant traffic disruptions along the Dhaka-Tangail section of the N4.
Authorities could attempt to forcibly disperse activists if negotiations fail, prompting skirmishes. Arson and vandalism cannot be ruled out. Localized transport disruptions are likely to continue over the coming hours. Associated localized business disruptions are possible.
The protest site is approximately 25 km (15.5 miles) north-northeast of Dhaka.
Avoid demonstrations due to the threat of violence. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Allow additional travel time along the impacted route through Dec. 23. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
