Heightened security and disruptions likely in Ouagadougou and other major Burkinabe cities through at least Dec. 12 due to Republic Day.

Warning

Event

Officials will likely impose heightened security measures in parts of Ouagadougou and other major Burkinabe cities through at least Dec. 12 in connection with Republic Day. The holiday is annually celebrated Dec. 11 but will be observed Dec. 12 this year. Authorities in the capital have reportedly deployed an increased security presence in the vicinity of Place de la Nation ahead of the holiday; roadblocks have also been reported in the area. Authorities will probably institute temporary movement restrictions in areas subject to Republic Day gatherings and parades.

Additionally, demonstrations that were slated to take place in Ouagadougou Dec. 10 have been canceled, with organizers now planning to hold a press conference in the Cissin neighborhood instead. Rallies, protests, and celebrations are nonetheless likely in the capital and other major cities across the country ahead of and during the holiday period. Clashes between event participants and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Holiday-related disruptions to transport, business, and government office operations are likely nationwide through at least Dec. 12.

Advice

Avoid official Republic Day ceremonies, cultural events, government buildings, and crowded places due to possible security threats. Exercise caution if operating in areas impacted by demonstrations. Plan for traffic disruptions near event sites, especially in Ouagadougou, and allow additional time to reach nearby destinations. Confirm business appointments during the holiday period. Heed all official security and traffic advisories.
