Warning

Event

Public health officials report elevated seasonal influenza activity across Central Asia and Europe, with more than 14,690 confirmed cases reported Oct. 1-Nov. 28. Spain (5,556 cases) is the most affected country followed by the UK (2,905 cases), Portugal (2,571), and France (1,238 cases). Health authorities urge individuals to get vaccinated against influenza and to take personal protective measures against all respiratory viruses, such as regularly washing hands, wearing masks, and social distancing when ill. Additional cases will likely be identified in the coming weeks as disease surveillance continues. This represents the most updated information available as of Dec. 8.

Context

Seasonal influenza activity reoccurs each year in Central Asia and Europe and typically peaks during the colder months, usually October-April. Seasonal influenza is a highly contagious disease caused by a virus. Symptoms typically appear two days after exposure but can develop up to four days after exposure. Typical symptoms are nondescript, including fever (though not in all cases), cough, congestion, aches, and fatigue. The disease occurs in all age groups but is particularly severe in the elderly or persons with high-risk medical conditions. Influenza vaccinations are recommended yearly since the influenza virus undergoes frequent changes.

Advice

Visit a doctor to ensure vaccination against seasonal influenza. Practice basic health precautions. Seek medical attention if symptoms develop within a week of being in affected areas.
