Event

A magnitude-5.2 earthquake occurred in Jutiapa Department in southern Guatemala at around 09:02 Dec. 11. The epicenter was about 1 km (0.6 miles) west of El Adelanto. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 188 km (117 miles), and weak shaking was probably felt throughout southern and central Guatemala, parts of northwestern El Salvador, and far western Honduras. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake, and damage is unlikely. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Aftershocks are possible over the coming days.
