Montenegro: Further protests by anti-government activists are likely in Podgorica through December /update 1
Further protests by anti-government activists are likely in Podgorica, Montenegro, through December.
Event
Further protests by anti-government activists are likely in Podgorica through December. These are likely near government buildings, public squares, and parks. The movement "Ima nas" ("We are here" or "We are many") is planning demonstrations in Podgorica on Dec. 19 and 20; both actions are taking place at 19:00 outside the parliament building. The protestors are denouncing the government's new law that removes the president's role in selecting the prime minister, and are calling for early elections. Demonstrations on Dec. 12 and 17 attracted around 10,000 attendees; thousands of people are likely to attend future gatherings.
Authorities are likely to deploy large numbers of police to future events. Security cordons and associated road closures will likely prompt travel disruptions. Clashes are possible between police and activists. Clashes were reported at previous actions. Protests may also occur in other towns.
Advice
Avoid all protests as a routine security precaution. In the event of violence, withdraw from the area. Check for disruptions in protest affected areas and allow extra time to complete journeys.
