New Caledonia: Unionized workers plan territorywide strike and related demonstrations from Dec. 12

Workers to hold strike, protests in New Caledonia from Dec. 12. Increased security likely; localized transport disruptions possible.

Warning

Event

Various labor unions plan to strike across New Caledonia from Dec. 12 to demand increased wages for the private sector. Participants include workers from the civil services, mining, and trade industries. If prolonged, the work stoppage could disrupt business operations and public service availability. Organizers may cancel the action at short notice if negotiations with employer unions succeed.

Strike supporters also intend to hold protests Dec. 16 though details are not immediately available. Popular gathering venues include government buildings in Noumea, provincial assembly buildings in Kone and Lifou, and various town halls in Mare, Ouvea, and Poindimie. Additional demonstrations are possible near other prominent government buildings and public squares, as well as along major thoroughfares in the coming weeks. Larger gatherings during earlier labor actions have attracted hundreds of participants, especially in Noumea. Security personnel will likely monitor any protests that materialize. Isolated skirmishes between police and activists cannot be ruled out. Localized transport disruptions are possible near well-attended demonstrations.

Advice

Confirm business appointments and transport reservations for the duration of the strike. Exercise caution near any demonstrations as a standard security precaution. Allow additional travel time near potential protest locations, especially in central Noumea. Heed all security and traffic advisories.
