Qatar: Heightened security likely in Doha as a precaution for crowd management during Argentina vs. France final match Dec. 18
Heightened security likely in Doha, Qatar, during Argentina vs. France final match Dec. 18; localized clashes possible.
Event
Authorities in Doha will likely maintain very tight security around Lusail Stadium, Souq Waqif, fan zones, and other popular gathering places in the Qatari capital ahead and after the FIFA World Cup final match between Argentina and France, scheduled to kick off at 18:00 Dec. 18.
Since Argentina qualified for the final phase of the FIFA World Cup Dec. 13, supporters have expressed frustration over the lack of available tickets. FIFA organizers have released over 10,000 new tickets reserved for Argentine supporters, but protests over the perceived over-pricing of the seats have been reported. Preliminary reports indicate that an unknown number of so-called "Barras Bravas" - Argentine soccer fan groups with a reputation for provoking violence with supporters of opposing teams or against police - are planning to attend the event. Authorities will almost certainly take extra precautions, given the high stakes of the final game for supporters from both countries.
Lusail Stadium has a capacity of over 89,900 seats, which, according to FIFA statements, should all be occupied. On Dec. 13, over 50,000 Argentine fans supported their team in the Lusail Stadium. There will likely be an even greater presence of Argentine supporters on Dec. 18. During previous matches, incidents of fans without valid tickets arriving at the stadium have caused significant delays and crowd management issues in Doha. Similar incidents will likely occur on Dec. 18, creating crowd management challenges.
Large celebratory gatherings and demonstrations are likely following the match. Qatari authorities will likely be quick to respond to any confrontations or other security incidents that may occur. Localized transport disruptions due to road closures and other security measures are possible. Ground transport and air travel congestion are possible in the coming days as the World Cup ends.
Advice
Exercise increased situational awareness in Doha into at least the early morning hours of Dec. 19, particularly in the vicinity of Lusail Stadium and other venues where fans may hold post-match gatherings. Strictly heed the instructions of security personnel; respect local customs and avoid sensitive topics of conversation. Plan for ground transport and air travel congestion as the World Cup ends.
