Senegal: Political activists plan to stage a protest in Dakar Dec. 30
Political activists to stage a demonstration at Place de la Nation in Dakar, Senegal, beginning 15:00 Dec. 30; heightened security likely.
Event
Activists affiliated with several civil society organizations, including Y'en a marre, Yewwi Askan Wi, and the Front for a Popular and Pan-African Anti-Imperialist Revolution (FRAPP), plan to stage a demonstration at the Place de la Nation (Place de l'Obelisque) in Dakar starting at 15:00 Dec. 30. The purpose of the action is to denounce the alleged embezzlement of COVID-19 funding and demand the resignation of government officials, among other issues. The protest action, dubbed "covidgate," coincides with the opening of a judicial inquiry on the management of COVID-19 funding.
Authorities will almost certainly deploy an increased security presence near the march route as a precaution. Localized traffic disruptions are likely. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.
Advice
Avoid the area of the demonstration as a standard precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Heed instructions from the security forces. Leave the area at the first sign of any security disturbance.
