South Korea: Disability rights activists likely to continue to stage protests at Seoul's subway stations through at least late December

Disability rights activists likely to continue to stage protests at subway stations in Seoul, South Korea, through at least late December.

Informational

Event

Activists affiliated with the Solidarity Against Disability Discrimination (SADD) group are likely to continue to stage protests at Seoul's subway stations through at least late December. Organizers are demanding multiple concessions, including greater funding in the government's budget for disability rights as well as accommodations to improve disabled persons' freedom of movement. Wheelchair users affiliated with SADD reportedly plan to stage subway-riding protests at Samgakji Station at 08:00 and 14:00 daily through Dec. 15; dozens of activists are likely to participate and attempt to delay train services. On Dec. 12, a related demonstration caused minor subway train delays along Line 4. Authorities have threatened to have subway trains pass through Samgakji Station without stopping in the event that protest activity causes major delays.

Heightened security and train service delays are likely where related demonstrations materialize. Residual disruptions may continue after any rally ends as services normalize. Increased demand for alternative modes of transportation is possible.

Advice

Avoid the protests as a precaution. Plan accordingly for train service delays and traffic disruptions. Allow additional travel time near affected locations. Seek alternative transport if necessary. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
