A magnitude-5.0 earthquake occurred in Jutiapa Department, Guatemala at around 22:47 CST Jan. 15. The epicenter was about 2 km (1 mile) southwest of Zapotitlan, Guatemala. The tremor occurred at a depth of approximately 3 km (2 miles). Moderate shaking likely occurred near the epicenter and light shaking may have occurred in southern and central Guatemala, El Salvador, and western Honduras. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties because of the earthquake. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Aftershocks are possible over the coming days.
