Guadeloupe: Load shedding likely to persist through mid-January
Load shedding is likely to persist in Guadeloupe through mid-January due to ongoing labor action.
Event
Officials in Guadeloupe are likely to continue to implement load shedding through mid-January in response to ongoing labor action at the Pointe Jarry power plant. The action was launched Dec. 19 in response to demands for higher wages. In recent days, authorities have implemented 1-2 hours of rotating load shedding during peak times.
Temporary commercial and communications disruptions are possible while load shedding and unscheduled disruptions are taking place; cellular and mobile services could be affected. Traffic disruptions and longer driving times are possible during these periods due to malfunctioning traffic signals. Trains may also experience delays if outages impact signaling devices or overhead wires. Power outages could also result in the temporary unavailability of essential services such as ATMs and filling stations.
Advice
Power laptops, tablets, mobile phones, and other business or travel-critical appliances regularly. Download available warning apps covering planned or unplanned power outages and monitor announcements from the utility.
