Indonesia: Islamist groups plan to protest in Jakarta Jan. 30 to denounce burning of Quran
Islamist groups protest at the Embassy of Sweden in Jakarta, Indonesia, from 11:00 Jan. 30. Tight security almost certain.
Event
Various Muslim groups are calling for a protest outside the Embassy of Sweden in Jakarta from 11:00 Jan. 30. The action is to denounce the burning of the Quran by a far-right activist from Denmark, who received authorization from Swedish police to protest outside Turkey's Embassy in Stockholm, Sweden. Members of Alumni Brotherhood (PA) 212, National Movement to Guard Ulama's Religious Edicts (GNPF Ulama), and the now-defunct Islam Defenders Front (FPI) will participate in the action. Hundreds to thousands of people are expected to attend the protest. Gatherings could also occur at other locations in Jakarta, such as the State Palace and Arjuna Wijaya Horse Statue area.
Authorities will likely deploy police personnel to monitor the demonstration. Heightened security measures, including roadblocks and cordons, are possible at the Embassy of Sweden and surrounding areas Jan. 30. Localized traffic and business disruptions are possible during the action, especially if activists occupy nearby roads. Traffic disruptions are possible along Doktor Ide Anak Agung Gde Agung and Professor Doktor Satrio roads. Clashes may occur if officials forcibly disperse the demonstrators. Police could conduct mass arrests if protesters refuse to disperse when ordered to do so.
Advice
Avoid the Embassy of Sweden Jan. 30 due to possible clashes. Plan for possible road closures and business disruptions near any demonstrations and seek alternative routes to circumvent affected areas. If any violence erupts nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter at a non-government building. Heed all official traffic and security advisories,
