Mexico: Activists to march in downtown Mexico City from 16:00 Jan. 20 to protest National Guard presence in Metro system

Activists to march in central Mexico City, Mexico, from 16:00 Jan. 20 to protest National Guard presence in Metro system.

Warning

Event

Activists plan to march in downtown Mexico City Jan. 20. The purpose of the action is to denounce the increased presence of the National Guard in the Metro system following a Jan. 7 Metro accident. Participants will assemble at the Angel de la Independencia and march toward the Zocalo at 16:00.

The demonstration will likely cause transport disruptions along the march route. Although the action should remain largely peaceful, authorities will almost certainly deploy an increased security presence nearby as a precaution. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out, especially if security forces attempt to forcibly disperse crowds. Localized business disruptions are likely.

Advice

Avoid the march as a precaution. Allow additional time to reach destinations near the march route. Seek alternate routes to circumvent any related transport disruptions. Do not attempt to cross any roadblocks set up by protesters; wait for the police to dismantle them before proceeding. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
