Mexico: Indigenous rights activists to stage protest march in downtown Mexico City from 16:00 Oct. 24
Indigenous rights activists to stage protest march toward Zocalo in Mexico City, Mexico, from 16:00 Oct. 24; increased security likely.
Activists affiliated with the National Indigenous Congress and Indigenous Council of Government (Congreso Nacional Indigena y Concejo Indigena de Gobierno, CNI/CIG) are planning to stage a protest march in Mexico City from 16:00 Oct. 24. The purpose of the demonstration is to denounce violence targeting indigenous peoples, including in southern Mexico, and to demand justice for the murder of a Catholic priest in Chiapas State on Oct. 20. Demonstration participants will reportedly gather at the Antimonumento Ayotzinapa 43 (intersection of Avenida Paseo de la Reforma and Bucareli) and then march toward the Zocalo (Plaza de la Constitucion). Authorities have asserted that protest participants may march to the Plaza de la Constitucion via Avenida Paseo de la Reforma, Avenida Juarez, Avenida Lazaro Cardenas, and Avenida 5 de Mayo. Officials have asserted that as many as 3,000 people may participate in the protest march.
Although the action should remain largely peaceful, authorities will probably deploy an increased security presence near the march as a precaution. Transport and business disruptions will likely affect areas near the march route for the duration of the demonstration. Skirmishes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out.
Avoid the demonstration as a precaution. Seek alternative routes to circumvent the protest march and any related disruptions. Allow additional time to reach destinations if operating in the affected area of Mexico City. Heed the instructions of authorities.
