Pakistan: Activists likely to stage nationwide demonstrations through at least early February following recent protest activity

Activists likely to protest across Pakistan through at least early February after recent protest activity over electricity disruptions.

Warning

Event

Activists are likely to stage nationwide protests through at least early February to denounce ongoing power and water supply disruptions. Demonstrators have recently held rallies in several cities, including Jaranwala, Quetta, Muzaffarabad, and parts of Sindh Province. Residents in Karachi protested along Shahrah-e-Faisal Road and Shaheed Millat Road Expressway Jan. 17, prompting localized transport disruptions, notably toward Jinnah International Airport (KHI).

Further related demonstrations are likely in the near term; activists regularly hold demonstrations of varying sizes and types to denounce supply shortages. Any additional protests will likely involve gatherings at power utility offices, government buildings, and/or public squares. Demonstrators will also likely march along or block roadways, causing further localized transport disruptions. Security personnel usually close sections of affected roadways and divert traffic from demonstration sites. Larger gatherings may draw up to hundreds of participants.

Authorities will likely monitor any demonstrations that materialize and may attempt to disperse especially disruptive gatherings. Clashes between activists and police are possible. Disruptions to business and telecommunications, including cellular and mobile services, may occur. Transport disruptions are likely in areas with malfunctioning traffic signals. Power outages could result in the temporary unavailability of essential services, such as ATMs and gas stations. Blackouts could adversely affect security protocols, including alarm systems and electronic fences; opportunistic criminal activity could increase during electricity outages.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations due to possible clashes. If clashes break out, depart the area immediately. Do not attempt to cross roadblocks, as protesters may react violently. Allow additional travel time near protests. Charge all communication and portable electronic devices when possible. Unplug electronic equipment that is not connected to surge protectors. Exercise caution when driving in areas affected by power outages. Confirm business appointments. Verify that security systems are operational, including after power is restored. Ensure that generators are functional and fully fueled. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
