Pakistan: Further demonstrations possible nationwide through at least early February in reaction to recent Quran burning by Swedish activist

Further demonstrations possible in Pakistan through at least early February after recent burning of Quran by activist in Sweden.

Warning

Event

Further demonstrations are possible nationwide through at least early February to denounce the recent burning of the Quran by an activist outside the Turkish Embassy in Sweden. On Jan. 27, several religious political parties held rallies in various cities, including Karachi and Lahore. Future protests over the issue will be most likely near the Swedish Embassy, as well as prominent government buildings, public squares, press clubs, and/or major thoroughfares. Security personnel usually close sections of affected roadways and divert traffic from demonstration sites. Such gatherings could draw thousands of participants in major cities.

Authorities will likely monitor any demonstrations that materialize and may attempt to disperse overly disruptive gatherings. Clashes between activists and police are possible. Activists could march along or block roadways, prompting localized transport disruptions.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations due to possible clashes. If clashes break out, depart the area immediately. Do not attempt to cross roadblocks, as protesters may react violently. Allow additional travel time near sites where gatherings materialize.
