Palestinian Territories: Lingering heightened security likely in Nablus area after clashes break out late Jan. 17

Lingering heightened security measures likely around Nablus, Palestinian Territories, after Palestinians, Israeli forces clash late Jan. 17.

Warning

Event

Israeli forces will likely impose heightened security measures around Nablus over the coming hours after clashes broke out between Palestinians and Israeli security forces in the area late Jan. 17. Palestinians lit tires on fire and attacked Israel Defense Forces (IDF) vehicles with Molotov cocktails and stones to denounce the IDF's move to secure the area before a visit to Joseph's Tomb by Israeli settlers. Israeli authorities have fired tear gas at the Palestinians, reportedly wounding at least one person. Palestinian militants have also exchanged gunfire with Israeli forces near the Balata refugee camp and in the vicinity of Joseph's Tomb; while no casualties were immediately confirmed in connection with the gunfire, casualties will likely be reported over the coming hours.

Transport and business disruptions are likely in the Nablus area, especially near the Balata refugee camp and Joseph's Tomb, over the short term. Increased Israeli security measures may include the imposition of movement restrictions or checkpoints, among other controls.

Advice

Exercise caution if operating in the Nablus area and refrain from traveling to violence-affected locations until the situation stabilizes; if clashes break out in your area, seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Do not attempt to bypass any security checkpoints without authorities' permission. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and your home government.
