Protesters have shut down Interstate 55 in Memphis, Tennessee, as of late Jan. 27 in response to the death of a man, Tyre Nichols, following a confrontation with police in the city. Further protests remain likely in the city through at least early February. Additionally, the funeral for Nichols will be held at the Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church at 10:00 Feb. 1; a large gathering is likely in the area amid the ceremony.

Heightened security and disruptions to transport and business are likely near related gatherings, especially in the vicinity of government buildings, police stations, and main thoroughfares. Clashes between demonstrators and police are possible, and acts of violence and vandalism cannot be ruled out.

Context

Tyre Nichols died in a hospital Jan. 10, three days after police stopped and forcibly arrested him due to a traffic violation. The five officers involved in his arrest were fired due to excessive force, and they have each been charged with second-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, official misconduct, and official oppression. Video of the arrest was released evening Jan. 27; prompting unrest in Memphis and other cities across the country.
